Word
Squares
What
is a WordSquare?
This is a block of characters
that spell words both horizontally and vertically.
The empty grid is a challenging
word puzzle for the most discerning logophile.
The simplest puzzle is the
two square consisting of only four letters, increasing in size and complexity
to the pinnacle of achievment so far: the Ten Square.
The
Ten Square
One order 10 Wordsquare
is the well-known creation of the late Dmitri Borgmann. It contains
three duplicate words, whereas the lower order ones each contain words
that are all different. Furthermore, the words in the Borgmann Tensquare
are quite abstruse, being extracted from seven different sources of reference.
The current objective in
the search for a generally-accepted Tensquare, which has thwarted formists
for more than a century, is to employ words found only in Standard English
Dictionaries.
Can you improve on Ted's
effort, shown at below? Though it satisfies the dictionary criteria,
not all words used consist of ten letters. Some ten-letter
sets are two-word phrases; SATIN WEAVE, however, is a dictionary listing.
